October in Destin has a rhythm all its own. Boats leave the harbor before sunrise. Anglers chase the next big fish. Crowds gather around the scales in the afternoon. And for an entire month, the Destin Fishing Rodeo turns the World's Luckiest Fishing Village into one enormous fishing celebration.

The 78th Annual Destin Fishing Rodeo runs October 1–31, 2026, continuing a Destin tradition that began in 1948.

More than 30,000 anglers compete for over $100,000 in cash and prizes, but the Rodeo is much more than a competition. It is part fishing tournament, part harbor festival and part celebration of the community that made Destin famous.

A Destin Tradition Worth Building a Trip Around

The Destin Fishing Rodeo was created in 1948 to bring more visitors to Destin and celebrate the community's growing reputation as a fishing destination.

Organizers later moved the Rodeo to October to extend Destin's visitor season beyond summer. Nearly eight decades later, that decision helped create one of the most recognizable fall traditions on the Emerald Coast.

This isn't simply an event happening in Destin. It is part of Destin.

Want to Fish the Rodeo? You Can.

One of the best things about the Destin Fishing Rodeo is that you do not have to be a professional tournament angler to participate.

Anglers fishing aboard properly registered charter boats and private boats participate without an individual Rodeo entry fee. Other opportunities include kayak, paddleboard, pier, bridge, jetty, surf and shoreline fishing, subject to current Rodeo registration requirements.

Visiting Destin? Booking a registered charter is one of the easiest ways to experience Rodeo month. You get the boat, equipment and local knowledge—and your catch may wind up on the leaderboard.

Always confirm current vessel registration, participation requirements and tournament rules through the official Destin Fishing Rodeo before fishing.

Don't Fish? Go to the Weigh-In.

You don't need a fishing rod to experience the best part of Rodeo month.

Daily weigh-ins are held from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. behind AJ's Seafood & Oyster Bar on Destin Harbor.

They are free and open to the public.

Boats arrive. Coolers open. The crowd moves toward the scales. A grouper, tuna, king mackerel or something considerably larger comes out of the boat.

Then everyone waits for the number.

That atmosphere is what makes the Rodeo such a good addition to a family Destin vacation. Come down for an hour after the beach and you may find yourself staying for the afternoon.

Bring the Kids

The Destin Fishing Rodeo is designed for another generation of anglers too.

Junior and Teen divisions are part of the tournament, and the Rodeo states that every child who enters an eligible fish weighing at least one pound receives a rod and reel and a certificate.

Rodeo month also includes family-oriented events, including the Destin 5K Rodeo Run on October 4, the Kids Fall Movie Festival on October 12, Larry Hatchett Fishing Foundation Day on October 17 and Halloween on the Harbor on October 31.
