The Destin area serves up a great variety of special events throughout the winter months.  The following is a brief listing of some of the events scheduled for 2008!
 

January, 2008

January 5th -- The Destin History & Fishing Museum will sponsor the Destin Gumbo Contest from 11am-2pm at the Destin Community Center. There will be 2 categories of entrants: restaurants and individuals. After judging, the gumbo will be sold to the public beginning at 11AM. January 9th -- Hal Holbrook in Mark Twain Tonight Don’t miss a living, breathing, American masterpiece. This show is quite simply, one of the most acclaimed and enduring performances in the history of theater. Go back in time with Hal Holbrook’s characterization of the great novelist and raconteur. The New York Times said, “Mr. Holbrook … is uproarious, his ability to hold an audience by acting is brilliant.” With a show called very politically incorrect and very, very funny, The Washington Post noted that with Holbrook “The transformation is so complete as to be almost unsettling at times. January 12th -- Hometown Saturday Night.  7:30pm at OWC Mattie Kelly Arts Center.  Start the New Year with an exciting concert featuring the Mr. Jack Daniel’s Original Cornet Band in their nationally touring production of “Hometown Saturday Night”.  Details:  (850) 729-6000

January 15th -- Pelican Pickers at Robert L. F. Sikes Public Library - Crestview.  The Pelican Pickers play Appalachian mountain lap dulcimers primarily but augment their sound with the banjo, mandolin, guitar, Irish penny whistle, bowed psaltery, fiddle, harmonica, shuttle pipes, Native American flute, silver flute, autoharp, and hammered dulcimer, depending on which of their members are present at a gig. January 19th -- Paradise Carnivale Ball and Taste of Mardi Gras At Emerald Coast Conference Center - 8:00pm to 1:00am.  It's a carnival atmosphere with loads of decorations, live music, delicious Mardi Gras food and loads of fun! January 27th -- From Baroque to the Beatles.  7:30pm at the Fort Walton Beach Civic Auditorium.  Move over Victor Borge and make way for today’s concert pianist with a Cheshire Cat sense of humor! January 30th -- Annie.  Leapin’ Lizards! Annie is coming to Niceville! This timeless tale of Little Orphan Annie will give a whole new generation the chance to experience this classic musical about never giving up hope, while warming the heats of those who remember it as a cherished old friend. February, 2008

February 1st -- Ring of Fire.  The music of the Man in Black ignites the stage in this new Broadway musical featuring 38 songs from the legendary Johnny Cash. Stories of passion, redemption, humor, and salvation will set the stage ablaze in this musical celebration of the world's most famous rebel. Hits include; "Walk the Line,” "Hurt,” “Jackson,” “I’ve Been Everywhere,” "Folsom Prison Blues,” “A Boy Named Sue,” and the title track "RING OF FIRE”. February 16th & 17th -- I Love A Piano.  The Emerald Coast Concert Associations presents Brian Curl and Company in “I Love A Piano”. This years show stars pianist, vocalist, and entertainer Brian Curl together with Joey MacDonald, drummer Eddie Graham and Joe Bruno on bass. Join them as they create a colorful, panoramic journey into a world of music featuring a fantastic variety of styles including ragtime, rock ‘n roll, tin pan alley, showtunes, jazz, semi-classical, and pop favorites. February 20th -- The Producers.  Experience the biggest Tony Award winner in Broadway history with the Mel Brooks musical comedy, “The Producers” –- “Simply the funniest, most fearlessly irreverent thing ever seen on stage!” (USA Today). This is a laugh out loud, ‘I can’t believe they just did that’ extravaganza of quick wit and one show-stopping number after another. February 25th -- Movin’ Out.  Five-time Grammy winner Billy Joel and legendary director/choreographer Twyla Tharp joined forces to create this spectacular Broadway musical that Time Magazine declares "The #1 show of the year!" More than 24 Billy Joel rock classics are brought to electrifying new life as Movin Out tells the story of five life-long friends over two turbulent decades. – including their post-World War II idealism, the Vietnam War and its subsequent unrest, and finally, survival.
